HALLOWEEN
A GAY HOLIDAY
The spirits were high. The weather was cold and damp. There were parties contests, witches and goblins. There was pumpkin pie and there were costumes some scary, some funny. escape from reality and the hum-drum drudgery of day to day life...it was Halloween '82, Northeast Ohio style.
An
Even the calendar cooperated by having October 31st fall on a Sunday, giving the young and old a full weekend to celebrate and revel in a land of make believe. They donned their masks and costumes, fulfilling secret fantasies. Then gathered to marvel at each others ingenuity and sense of humor.
A surprisingly large number of house parties were held this year as compared to previous years. Some small, some big (one house party had over 100 people), and all a lot of fun. Somehow, costuming loosens peoples inhibitions and the endless variety of costumes gives even the least talkative among us many things to talk about, even if the potent witches brew, concocted by the host didn't already accomplish that.
Some masqueraders found financial rewards for the time and effort they put into dressing up. As many bars and clubs held contests with cash prizes of various amounts. The top prize at Traxx was $600.00 while Exedra customers got a cool $1,000.00 in cash, not a bad days pay by any means. Besides the cash awards many other prizes, ranging from water beds Each to bar tabs, were given away. year the costumes are so much better that it is really a shame some outstanding costumes didn't win, maybe more contests or prizes could be offered in the future.
Now that Halloween weekend is over, it's back to the same old routine for most of us. But, at least, for one weekend the Walter Mittys inside us got a reprieve and a chance to act out our fantasies.
